McCandlish Lillard Places Second in Region in Legal Food Frenzy Competition

McCandlish & Lillard Places Second in Region in Legal Food Frenzy Competition

Fairfax and Leesburg, Va., June 4, 2013 — McCandlish & Lillard, PC is pleased to announce that it placed second among medium size law firms in the Northern Virginia Region in the 7th Annual Statewide Legal Food Frenzy Competition sponsored by the Virginia Bar Association and the Federation of Virginia Food Banks. This spring marked McCandlish & Lillard’s fourth year participating in the food and fund drive, which is held among Virginia law firms, law schools, legal government offices and organizations.

The Legal Food Frenzy was created in 2007 in response to the overwhelming need among Virginia’s food insecure, which, according to a recent study by Feeding America, is comprised of over 1,000,000 individuals. A large number of these individuals are senior citizens, disabled adults, children, and individuals who have lost their jobs, are unemployed or are underemployed. Over the past seven years members of Virginia’s legal community have devised fun and creative strategies to raise funds and food for this charitable cause, amassing the equivalent of more than 10 million pounds of food.

This year’s competition was held from April 1-12, 2013. During those two weeks McCandlish & Lillard raised the equivalent of 29,162 pounds of food that was donated to the Capital Area Food Bank, more than doubling its success of 2012. The firm decided to create two teams—team McCandlish and team Lillard—that competed against each other for prizes, including neck and shoulder massages, catered lunches, ice cream socials and most importantly bragging rights against co-workers.

The intra-office competition heated up with an “arrest your co- workers” initiative, which was featured by Virginia Lawyer’s Weekly in the April 24, 2013 article by Peter Vieth, entitled, Frenzy Hit Fever Pitch At Some Firms. During the competition attorneys and staff from team McCandlish and team Lillard selected members from the rival team to be arrested. Being arrested entailed donning a prisoner jumpsuit and having your mug shot posted on the firm’s Facebook site. Prisoners had to wear the costumes until they made bail, which was set at $100 per inmate in donations to the Capital Area Food Bank.

Other competition highlights included a potluck luncheon with neighboring businesses, silent auction raffles and jeans days on Fridays. Members of the firm enjoyed the friendly competition and felt good about giving back to their community and helping countless children, disabled adults, senior citizens and recently unemployed Virginians survive another day without hunger.
